Calming booths, meditation: Amazon has a plan for ‘exhausted’ employees – Times of India
Being one of the biggest companies in the world means that Amazon is also one of the most sought after among professionals. Yet, there have been reports that it’s not the easiest places to work and workers have often complained over working conditions — especially those who work in warehouses. Amazon clearly wants to counter that narrative and wants to become — in the company’s own words — the “Earth’s Safest Place to Work”.
The company recently announced a program called WorkingWell that will focus on providing employees with physical and mental activities, wellness exercises, and healthy eating support that are scientifically proven to help them recharge and re-energise, and ultimately reduce the risk of injury. Amazon plans to spend $300 million on safety projects in 2021.
What is the WorkingWell program?
The program, according to a press release by Amazon, will cover training and conditioning, wellness services, and technology.
Amazon will focus on scientifically proven health and safety education as well as exercises.
It will have Health and Safety Huddles, where daily opportunities to engage employees on strong body mechanics, wellness topics, and ongoing safety education. Employees will be shown interactive videos on rotating topics created by health and safety professionals and injury prevention specialists.
Amazon will also create Wellness Zones which will provide employees with voluntary stretching and muscle recovery via easily accessible, dedicated spaces within Amazon’s operations buildings.
Then there’s something called AmaZen — individual interactive kiosks at Amazon buildings. During shifts, employees can visit AmaZen stations and watch short videos featuring easy-to-follow wellbeing activities, including guided meditations, positive affirmations, calming scenes with sounds, and more.
Amazon also plans to have Wellness Centres dedicated to preventing injuries and illness through preventative self-care, health and safety education, as well as first-aid treatment in case of injury.
Apart from this, Amazon will support the “nutritional health and wellbeing of employees by promoting healthy eating and increasing the availability of healthier options.” In break rooms, Amazon will have signages displayed to highlight healthy eating options.
