This is a proof that Google has big hardware plans – Times of India
When it comes to hardware, Google has created a very limited footprint in the world of technology. Of course, it used to have the Nexus brand for phones, which is now called Pixel, along with Nest, Pixelbook and others. But the availability of these devices were limited and Google ranked nowhere in the list of top shipments. However, this may soon change.
Google has announced it plans to open its first ever physical retail store in New York. “The new Google Store in Chelsea will be a space where customers can experience our hardware and services in a helpful way. We’ll be opening our doors to the public in summer 2021,” said Google in an official post.
Google will be replicating the in-store experience that Apple is known for. People will be able to check out Pixel phones, Nest devices, Fitbit wearables, Pixelbooks and more and choose to buy products from the store itself. They can also buy products online on GoogleStore.com and pick up their orders in store.
“Throughout the store, visitors will be able to experience how our products and services work together in a variety of immersive ways, which we’re excited to share more about when the doors open,” it added.
Google will also provide hardware and software support at its store. There will be product experts to “troubleshoot an issue, fix a cracked Pixel screen or help with installations.”
Google hasn’t revealed plans to open more stores across the world but it highlighted that this is an important step in their hardware journey. As to why it chose to open its first store in New York, Google said, “The Google Store Chelsea will be part of our urban campus in the Chelsea neighborhood, which is home to many of our 11,000+ Google NYC employees. Google has been in New York for the last 20 years, and we view the store as a natural extension of our longtime commitment to the city.”
